Cape Coral, FL

City Of Cape Coral

Cape Coral is a city located in Lee County, Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico. Founded in 1957 and developed as a planned community, the city's population estimate was over 200,000 for 2018. With an area of 120 square miles, Cape Coral is the largest city between Tampa and Miami. Cape Coral is well-known for its miles and miles of canal-front homes (almost 400 miles), so it is a boater’s haven, with relatively affordable real estate that has water access to the Intercoastal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico. “The Cape” as it’s lovingly called by locals, is mixed with full-time residential homes, with lots of vacation homes sprinkled in as well.

Things To Do

Due to Cape Coral’s proximity to the water, and the abundance of canal-front properties, boating and recreation abounds in this vibrant Southwest Florida city. Fishing is also naturally a popular activity in and around “The Cape.” Other options for amusement are: The Tom Allen Memorial Butterfly Garden, Southwest Florida Military Museum & Library, The Cape Coral Historical Society & Museum, a water park, several family amusement centers, and a weekly Farmer's Market. Sirenia Vista Park has kayak routes to Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve and the Yacht Club Community Park has a beach and pier on the Caloosahatchee River. To the north, Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve attracts the natural wildlife in the area and is perfect for bird watching. Cape Coral is also the gateway to Matlacha, a charming old-Florida fishing village, and Pine Island, Florida’s largest island.

The area averages 355 days of sunshine each year, but experiences precipitation on 145 days per year. While the summers are very warm, humid and rainy, the winters in Cape Coral are drier with moderate temperatures. This is why this area is so popular with snowbirds and vacationers, because the winter months are very pleasant.

History of Cape Coral

Cape Coral's history began in 1957 when two brothers from Baltimore, Maryland, Leonard and Jack Rosen, flew over the peninsula known as Redfish Point, across the Caloosahatchee River near present-day Fort Myers. Cape Coral was originally founded as Redfish Point. Leonard and Jack Rosen, who were real-estate developers, and a small group of partners, purchased a 103-square-mile tract for $678,000 in 1957 and in 1958, they began development of the city as a master-planned community.

Business Opportunity in Cape Coral

With an abundance of land still available, Cape Coral continues to grow in the residential and commercial sectors. Forbes magazine reports that the Cape Coral metro area is among the top 10 fastest-growing cities in the nation for jobs and population (Moody’s Analytics, 2018). According to CapeCoral.net, “as the state’s 8th most populated city, Cape Coral has a large, available workforce with close proximity to several higher education institutions, including Florida Gulf Coast University, where college graduates can be recruited to fill available positions. With a projected growth of more than 400,000, the city is only 47% built out today with room to grow. Cape Coral is ideally suited for tech/biotech, medical/healthcare, light manufacturing, and back office operations. New commercial centers, hotels, and other major projects are underway throughout the city, and a partnership is being sought for mixed-use redevelopment at a prime waterfront in South Cape, the city’s historic business district."
